An Informational Guide to El Dorado Hills, California

Updated: Jul 17

El Dorado Hills is one of the most desirable places to live and work in the Greater Sacramento Area.

While sometimes referred to as a city, El Dorado Hills is actually an unincorporated area of El Dorado County. The county's two cities are Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado Hills is located east of Sacramento, right off of Highway 50 and about a quarter of the way to South Lake Tahoe.

The literal translation of 'el dorado' is 'the golden.' This makes the name a double entendre of sorts. El Dorado Hills' rolling hills have a golden hue at sunset. It is also located less than 20 miles from Coloma, where gold was discovered in 1848.
